Some try to hide their age when approaching 40 years but that’s just not the case when it comes to Suffolk Peanut Fest. Reaching the four decade milestone is an amazing achievement, especially following a catastrophic 2016 festival which was shuttered early as a result of Hurricane Matthew.
As the 2016 Suffolk Peanut Fest Vice Chair, I witnessed the sincere camaraderie of the festival’s staff and volunteers, through good times and under the most trying of circumstances. Afterwards, we picked up the pieces, poured the mud out of our boots and moved forward in planning the 2017 Festival. I couldn’t imagine a better theme than “Cheers to 40 Years!” for a celebration that is certainly due its share of sunshine and crisp autumn temperatures.
I have been part of this event since 1991 and throughout the years I’ve watched our festival family grow—the volunteer’s kids now have kids of their own working the festival. We are all fortunate to produce an event where memories are made, where families root lifelong traditions and community pride. For many, a trip to a major theme park resort may never happen but if we have the opportunity to create even a tiny portion of that experience, then we’ve truly succeeded.
Suffolk Peanut Fest has long been one of my favorite festivals. As a promoter and producer of events, I found Suffolk Peanut Fest to have more of a “State Fair atmosphere”—the quintessential one-stop shop for family fun and entertainment. And you can’t beat the value—live music by national recording artists, a mud jam with giant mud-covered trucks roaring through three feet of mud, the sound of crunching metal at the demolition derby, not to mention the arts, crafts, shopping and activities for all ages.
I encourage everyone to take the time to experience Suffolk Peanut Fest first-hand! Stop by for a turn on the Ferris wheel, a giant turkey leg, our brilliant fireworks display or better yet, stop by and connect with your community, your friends and make new memories at an event that is “40 Years Young.”
